Chalong sits on Phuket's east coast, about 11 km south of Phuket Town. It is a working residential district built around a wide, boat-filled bay whose pier is one of the island's main departure points for day trips to the outer islands. Wat Chalong, the island's largest Buddhist temple, stands here too. Life happens inland and on the hillsides rather than along the water. Long-stay residents and families settle here for an everyday base with shops and services close by, not for a resort address.

The bay is the view, not the swim. Chalong's water is shallow and muddy, with boats moored across it, so residents drive to the beach. Kata, Karon, Nai Harn and Rawai are all roughly ten minutes over or around the hills. Patong and Phuket Town are each about twenty minutes, and the airport closer to an hour. The roads meet at Chalong Circle, the five-way junction feeding Rawai, Kata, Patong and Phuket Town. An underpass carries the through traffic beneath it, and the surface still backs up at the morning school run and again through the late afternoon. Away from the main roads the streets go quiet fast: gated lanes, single houses, hillside plots looking down over the bay, with the Big Buddha on Nakkerd hill standing on the ridge behind. BCIS Phuket is inside the district. This is a place for people who are happy to drive, not for anyone who wants to walk to the sea.
