Kathu is the inland part of the district that shares its name. Patong and Kamala beaches fall under the same administration, but the town itself sits in a valley between Phuket Town and Patong, with no coast of its own. Three 18-hole golf courses share that valley, and Red Mountain was built on a worked-out tin mine, the industry Kathu grew up on. It is a place people live and work rather than one they visit.

The drive to Patong takes 10 to 15 minutes over the hill on Route 4029, though that road is one of the busiest on the island and has closed for repairs after landslides. Phuket Town is about 20 minutes the other way, and the airport is roughly 34 kilometres north, about 40 minutes. Kathu is a working Thai town rather than a resort strip, with local markets, small shops and steady motorbike traffic, and Kathu Waterfall and the Phuket Mining Museum at its edges. Loch Palm and Red Mountain golf clubs sit next to each other in the valley, and Phuket Country Club is a few kilometres on. It suits people who want a base on the island rather than a holiday address. The trade-off is plain. There is no beach to walk to. Kajonkiet International School is in Kathu, but the other main international campuses are outside the district, towards Ko Kaeo and Thalang. If your day is built around sand, live on the coast.
