Living in Thalang

Thalang covers the north of Phuket and is the largest of the island's three districts. Highway 402 runs its length, from the Sarasin Bridge and the crossing to the mainland down through plantation country toward Phuket Town. The district holds the airport, the Khao Phra Thaeo forest and the national park beaches of the northwest coast. What it offers is space rather than a beach address: a plot with room around it, and a short run to the terminal.

Life here is spread out and car-dependent. The northwest coast holds Nai Thon, Nai Yang and Mai Khao, all three inside Sirinat National Park, which keeps building back from the shoreline. Mai Khao runs about eleven kilometres and is the longest beach on the island. The trade-off for living near the terminal is noise: planes come in low over its southern end on approach. Inland is a different island again, with rubber and palm plantations and Thai villages down the side roads. Shopping means driving to a supermarket rather than strolling a beach road, and evenings are quiet. Phuket Town is roughly twenty kilometres south, Patong about forty-five minutes by car and longer in high season. UWC Thailand sits on Thep Krasattri Road inside the district. Cherng Talay and Bang Tao lie on the district's western side and have their own pages here. It suits families and people who want quiet. It does not suit anyone who wants to walk to a bar.
