Living in Pa Klok
Pa Klok sits on Phuket's east coast, in Thalang district: mangrove shoreline, rubber smallholdings and fishing hamlets facing Phang Nga Bay. It runs from Cape Yamu in the south up to Ao Po and its marina in the north. There is no beach-resort strip here, and no swimming beach on the mainland shore. Access to the water is by pier, at Bang Rong and at Ao Po, and the airport is about 25 minutes away.
The water here is bay water, not surf. The mainland shoreline is mangrove and tidal flat, not a beach strip. For sand, people drive west to Nai Yang or Bang Tao, about half an hour across the island. What Pa Klok has instead is the bay. Bang Rong pier runs speedboats to Koh Yao and Koh Naka, and Ao Po Grand Marina sits at the northern end. Inland it is ordinary Thai village country: rubber plots and shrimp farms, elephant camps on the hill roads, with shops and 7-Elevens back west at the Heroines Monument junction. The lanes out to the headlands are narrow and poorly lit after dark. The airport is about 25 minutes away and Phuket Town about half an hour south; Patong is on the far side of the island, roughly 30 km by road. Schools mean a drive out of the district: UWC Thailand is on Thepkrasattri Road in Thalang, and the British International School is in Ko Kaeo to the south. Pa Klok suits boat owners and people who do not mind driving. It does not suit anyone who wants to walk to a beach.
