Patong is Phuket's main resort town, a bay on the Andaman west coast inside Kathu district. Roughly three kilometres of sand run its length, with steep hills rising behind and Kalim Bay at the northern end. It was a fishing village until tourism reached it in the 1980s and has been laid out around visitors ever since, so almost everything sits within walking distance. Phuket Town is about 15 km east over Patong Hill.

The beach is a three-kilometre curve, swimmable much of the year and flagged red when the monsoon swell runs from about May to October. Behind it the town is dense and walkable in a way most of Phuket is not: you can live in central Patong without a scooter. Bangla Road holds the bars and clubs, Jungceylon covers the shopping after its 2024 rebuild, and Nanai Road runs back from the seafront into the residential blocks under the hillside, where the villas look down over the bay. Pharmacies, clinics and supermarkets are inside a few blocks. The trade-offs are plain. It is loud after dark near the centre, the sand fills through high season, and Patong Hill jams morning and evening. The bigger international schools are all outside Patong, over the hill towards Kathu and Phuket Town or further north, though school buses serve the town. Kathu is about 7 km east, Phuket Town about 15, the airport around 40 km north and an hour in normal traffic. Quieter water is close: Tri Trang a few kilometres south, Freedom about five. Kalim, immediately north, is calmer but rocky rather than sandy. Patong suits people who want a town around them and owners letting short-term. Families after quiet usually look further along the coast.
